Cleaning Out My Old ‘Shoebox’

Life can be difficult to navigate at times.  For some it is constantly arduous .  I fall in that particular group when it comes to staying focused on my Photography.

These photos are either lo-res only available, meaning I have deleted the original hi-res or film ‘negative or I have saved them for nothing more than to have a few more snapshots in my old shoebox.

This may be the only photo remaining from a set I put together in 2009.   I have one other place to look for the old originals and if they aren’t there then this is it.  It was about 45 Infrared Photos.  They survived several ‘incidents’ but I fear that they are all gone.  I like the stark contrast with this particular snap.

So, back in the shoebox they go.  The lo-res snaps will stay on the blog as a reminder of how things go in my life.  Here today. Gone tomorrow.

As always, any and all comments are appreciated.  If you like a snap or two please let me know.  It may help me as I continue this journey.

Carhenge and a Few Rites of Spring

Saturday was the last day of a very long week.  After running a couple of appointments we stopped by an Antique Store that we frequent.  This ‘week from Hell’ ended when we discovered that someone we’ve known for years that worked at the Store had died.   This news hit us both, as it is often said, like a ton of bricks.

So, instead of tackling the piles of work sitting on my desk on Sunday I threw a couple of lenses in my camera bag and put it in the ol’ mini-van with another ‘small camera’ bag and we went for a drive to the ‘Springs.

After getting there I stopped in a Starbucks (I still had money left on a gift card that was sent to me) and got a quad white chocolate mocha – iced.  Then I opened the camera bag to get things ready so I could go looking for a few snaps.  The two lenses were in the bag but no camera.  So, I went to Plan B.  Always have a Plan B and a Plan C.  I took a digital compact camera and a point & shoot film camera out and put them up front with me.

Can’t show you the film snaps yet but these are a few of the digital snaps I took that day starting with Carhenge.  A great little photogenic place on Academy Blvd.

Next were a couple of quick pics at one of my many ‘secret gardens’ located along the Front Range.  Here in Colorado we refer to the area east of the mountains in the ‘flat lands’ as the Front Range.

The entrance to this place was a massive stone arch.  I thought it was a private location but it said ‘Public Welcome’.  I’m already planning on a visit so I can go inside.  I’m anxious to get up to the fourth floor.

This looked like fun but I couldn’t figure out how to get our mini-van out on the track so I could race. :)

Your cliche’ run of the mill Monument type structure.

The park was very active despite the ominous clouds over the Mountains.

Before heading back to Denver we stopped at one of our favorite Antique Haunts.  My wife spotted a wonderful old pine pie safe with old blue paint and the original wire screens still intact.

Dinner when we got back to town and then called it a day.  Back to those piles of work sitting on my desk but for several hours the crap of day to day work disappeared and all was good in the world.

I think every Spring Photo assembly has to have a picture of a box of crayons and who am I to break from tradition.

Not an exceptional group of photos but they all hold pleasant memories for me.

As always any and all comments are greatly appreciated.

Floating in a Late Winter Dream

I can see Winter fading.

I move about the land I have grown comfortable with.  The Earth exposing the Ghosts I only see in the long darkness that consumes the day.  I am greeted by the Spirits that trust me. That know me.   They float along with me and we watch Winter retreat into the light.

I am sad because I know that soon the Earth will hide much of the beauty I see now in a blanket of green.  I will miss Winter.  But I enjoy this last moment of floating in a Late Winter Dream.  I am happy.

These were ‘randomly’ picked from the 48 Photo Set that I created.  The complete Synergy produced 20 x 16 Prints.  I hope you enjoy this last glimpse of Winter.

I Can Fly a Kite With No Underwear

No Underwear. No Underwear.

Photography will always be my Creative Poison of Choice but that doesn’t mean I don’t like exploring other forms of mediums and art forms.  I was inspired by a teevee show that has been on the last two years.  It is called ‘Working With Artists’.  Each episode of the show would have a variety of artists taking on various unique challenges.

While I had some negative feelings about the ‘forced’ Art that was being created, what impressed me was how Artists with backgrounds in all forms of artistic mediums were challenged to work with mediums and ‘themes’ that were outside their comfort zone.

What I got from the show was an Artist is an Artist, regardless of how they express their creativity.

I’m still learning the process but all the images here were created using various fractal programs, then I would edit the images in much the same way I do with digital photographs; adjusting contrast, black and white levels, color, highlights, etc., and then finally I use a drawing tablet to do touchup.

While I prefer using color and creating more ‘organic’ images, there are times I’ve worked with geometric black and white fractals.  I process them exactly as I do with any of my digital photos.

On this last image I used a digital Art Filter to create a ‘plastic’ look to it.

I hope you have enjoyed this slight diversion from photography.  If you are interested in exploring this art medium…… ask away.  I can tell you that the process is very time consuming so if you’re the type of person who likes instant gratification then computer fractal art probably isn’t for you.

And finally I’m not sure if I should thank or curse the Flobots for putting this song in my head. If you’ve never heard the song consider yourself warned. It will stay in your head for days.

As always, any and all comments are appreciated.

Peace.

A Quick Jaunt Around Red Rocks Park

If you are a tourist visiting Colorado it is required by law that you visit the Red Rocks Park just west of Denver off I-70.  :)

So, to say that there have been a few bazillion pictures taken at Red Rocks would be an understatement.  Having a little free time recently I drove over to Red Rocks and grabbed whatever camera I had with me at the time (always be prepared).   I took some snapshots and was pleased with a few of them.  These aren’t your ‘cousin from Iowa’ Red Rocks pictures but I hope you enjoy them.

As always, any and all comments are greatly appreciated.

Peace. Dan.
